Should I Become A Mary Kay Consultant?

Mary Kay is an MLM that needs no explanations from me, and I believe you see someone drives the trademark of pink Cadillac on the street. But, the common question is “Should I become a Mary Kay Consultant?”

First of all, I am not a consultant of Mary Kay since I don’t use makeup every morning before I go out. So, you don’t need to worry about I try to sell you Mary Kay products in the middle of article or request you to click a “Buy” button here. What I am doing is to share my findings from Mary Kay’s business plan and evaluate how good it is for myself.

Secondly, I don’t think becoming one of Mary Kay’s consultants could let me quit my 9-5 jobs any sooner, and I will provide more details further down.

Shall we dive deep now?

What is Mary Kay?

Mary Kay is founded in 1963 when she was 45 and decided to pursue opportunities that had always been denied to women. She built Mary Kay with only $5,000 on hands, and the sales revenue was reported $3.25 billions with more than 29,500 members of the Independent Beauty Consultants(IBCs) in 2018.

Mary Kay herself started with one foundation and four skincare products in 1963, now it has more than 200+ products after 50-year development. As an independent beauty consultant, it’s safe to say that you won’t run out of products to sell any time soon.

Mary Kay is famous for its makeup and skincare products, and I guess you’ve ever seen your girlfriend/wife/mom uses them in the past. But, I won’t go through every item Mary Kay has on the catalog since I personally don’t use any makeup every morning. I will only list out basic products that you could promote to anyone who has interest in buying from you.

Product Lines

Does Mary Kay Product Work?

Yes! If Mary Kay product doesn’t work for women’s face, what do you think they could survive the long?

Based on Chickadvisor, the item that gets the most positive feedback is Mary Kay Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick. It ranks at the top 3 out of 1,397 lipsticks. Although it receives many good reviews, it still has the flaw that it doesn’t last as long!

A positive Mary Kay product Review

After the good review, I think we need to care about the bad reviews too. It’s better we know both good & bad parts of Mary Kay products before signing up with them. This is to help you gain more understanding of Mary Kay, and you could avoid those products with bad reviews if you become one of IBCs. Make sense, right?

How Does Mary Kay Work?

The nature of any MLMs is the same, you can make money in two main ways:

  1. Sell Mary Kay products to your customers and earn commissions
  2. Recruitment to get team bonuses

Getting Started

You need to connect with one Mary Kay IBCs, then sign & submit your independent beauty consultant agreement. The last, get your starter kit and you are good to start your Mary Kay Journey!

You pay $100 to get the $476 valued products as below screenshot, then you approach anyone who will likely buy from you in your region.

The Compensation Plan

Here comes the most crucial part of this article – the compensation plan!

  • Retail Commissions: 50% of the retail price. If you sell a $100 product, you earn $50. Simple!
  • Commissions of Team Orders: Earn 4%-13% commissions on wholesales orders of personal team members.
  • Team-building Bonuses: There are between $50 to $5,000, depending on your ranks and different sales requirements. Normally, the higher rank you achieve, the more bonuses you get, but the harder requirements for the next level.

Ironically, I cannot find the compensation plan from the official website, the above information is from HERE. You are welcome to check it out or watch the below YouTube video.

How Much Do You Need to Sell to Stay Active?

In order to stay “active”, you need to order at least $225 of wholesale products every three months from Mary Kay for both personal or promotional uses.

So, the minimum sales requirement for each month is around $75. I believe it’s not difficult to achieve if you do spend the effort and time on this.

What I Liked About Mary Kay

TOP#1 Female Empowerment

As the age of 45, Mary Kay was brave to build her cosmetic & skincare empire in 1963. This still inspires every woman who suffers from the invisible ceiling at workplaces or any other places.

Imagine how brave she was when she first stepped out to sell her own products in the world dominated by men? She is a good example and a great role model for all females on this planet!

TOP#2 Mary Kay Foundation

The Mary Kay Foundation is built in 1986 to fund research of cancers affecting women. In 2000, it includes the prevention of women violence as one of its missions.

Till now, the foundation got around $12 million to find a cure for the cancers that affect women and $18 million to shelters and programs for domestic violence.

TOP#3 Product Development

After 57-year business operations, Mary Kay has developed an R&D team with Ph.D.-level biochemists, toxicologists, microbiologists, and pharmacologists behind every product. This gives customers a better faith that they are serious about the quality and all of this is based on scientific research.

Mary Kay also claims that they don’t do any testing on animals in the process of developing any new products, but the team conducts important live product testings on human beings.

Ugly Truth About Mary Kay

TOP#1 Low Income Potential

Based on the numbers on Mary Kay Canada website, there is only 47% of independent beauty consultants earn more than $100. Meaning the rest 53% IBCs make less than $100 per year.

Would you quit your job if you only make $100 per year to cover all your bills? I think you won’t.

The good news is there are 224 members who made it to Independent Sales Director level, and the average annual income is $20,378 by Mary Kay. By this stage, I still think it’s not enough to support your family, right?

But, do people make a fortune by recruiting people and selling Mary Kay products?

Yes! There are about 9 members who made it to Independent National Sales Director level and earn more than $100,000 in a year.

TOP#2 Changing Formulas

One of the common complaints from Mary Kay IBCs is that the R&D team changes the formula so quickly that every customer only wants the latest version. Ask yourself, do you want the product with a revised and updated formulas or the previous ones?

This causes a problem that IBCs cannot sell out the products with the previous formulas, and the remaining products are stuck at IBC’s storage rooms & basements. Some of them even need to rent a place to put all those products if they cannot make any sales.

TOP#3 Extra Storage Burden

Just like I mentioned in the previous paragraph, IBCs face excess products that they couldn’t make any sales. Simultaneously, they also need to stay active to purchase at least $225 every three months.

The truth is that they buy more than they can sell and need to find a place to put all of the excess inventory. This means extra cost to them.

Who’s Mary Kay For?

Female, of course! If you do have a presentation, planning, or recruitment skills, you must go for a try. But, you also need to consider that saturated market in your region since there must be other consultants competing with you. If they get one sale, it would mean you lose one sale.

If you are like me, shy and introvert, I would suggest you go online for other ways to make extra money. I will reveal mine in one minute!

Can You Make Money Selling Mary Kay?

Yes! Remember the 9 members in Canada who earn more than $100,000 in one year? Of course, you can make money by Mary Kay. But, they are the top 1-2% of Mary Kay members, and it won’t happen in a short time to climb that high for beginners.

The untold truth is the majority failed. I didn’t mean you will fail as the majority. If you can accept to only earn less than $100 for the first few years and climb the ranking ladder gradually, you could go for it!

Is Mary Kay A Scam?

No, definitely. Mary Kay has legitimate products and many members around the globe. If it is a scam, I don’t think they can run the business for 57 years and still rocking our world.

Before you sign up with Mary Kay, I do hope you think twice and consider my findings on this article.

The low-income potential for the first few years, you might need to work and sell Mary Kay products after office hours or on the weekends.

The always-changing formulas that cause you only to sell the products with the latest version and need to find a place to store all your inventory at an extra cost.

I personally recommend affiliate marketing to avoid the above and chase the opportunity of making money online with a big smile.

My Alternative Way to Make Money Online

My alternative way to make money online is through Affiliate Marketing instead of promoting Mary Kay products in person. Try to imagine you sell Mary Kay’s products to your friends, family, or anyone you know, don’t you feel embarrassed or so nervous? They might avoid you ever since.

For me, I choose to affiliate marketing to replace all the awkward moments!

You don’t even need to buy any physical or digital products and sell to someone face to face. You also don’t need to convince people to join you as you downlines to build a team.

You only need to create a website or YouTube channel with quality content that makes people trust you then purchase them through your links.

The platform I am using currently is Wealthy Affiliate. The reasons for “Why Wealthy Affiliate?” are for all the training courses, every Friday night LIVE training courses, 24/7 sitesupport, and the most friendly community.

  1. Hi, Matt,

You did a good job here, I am sure all the information you have put together here will help many of the females out there looking to make a final decision if to go with Mary Kay business opportunity or not.

I have personally tried this type of business in the past with other cosmetic companies like Avon and Oriflame, but I found it a little difficult to do because I am an introvert like you 🙂

With the rapid development of informational technology nowadays, I have seen many of the MLM companies are leveraging the internet potential to make this business easier to run.

Do you have any idea if Mary Kay actually offers to its beauty consultants instruments like a personal website, or a sales funnel?

I appreciate your feedback on this.

    Best Wishes,
    Natalie

    • Hi Natalie,

Thanks for the feedback, I love we are same on Mary Kay at some points. With advanced information technology, MLMs leverage it to make selling and promoting easier than ever. I check again whether Mary Kay provides personal websites for all IBCs, and the answer is “Yes!”

On Mary Kay’s website, they mention “You’ll have access to your very own Mary Kay® Personal Web Site, your digital personal assistant myCustomers®, the Mary Kay InTouch® website just for Independent Beauty Consultants, the Mary Kay® Virtual Makeover App, eCatalogs, social media tools and more! ”
