What is Vector Marketing?

-Summary of Vector Marketing-

Product Name: Vector Marketing
Founders: Don Freda
Product Type: Kitchenware MLM
Price: No Cost to Start
Rating: 10 / 100
Recommend: No

Vector Marketing is a company that mainly sells Cutco Cutlery. Back in the 1980s, Cutco hired many independent sellers to sell its knives, and Vector Marketing was the best. In 1985, Cutco acquired Vector Marketing and adopted the direct selling strategy and marketing tactics to maximize sales.

They aim to recruit college students and coach them to be sales representatives for summer works. All representatives need to attend a three-day unpaid training and go selling Cutco Knives door-to-door in an old-fashion way. So, if the recruiters tell you that you are going to sell Cutco Cutlery, you are actually working for Vector Marketing.

How Does Vector Marketing Work?

Getting Started

You see a poster on the campus that hiring students for part-time works. If you are interested and call them, they will invite you to the first group interview. 9 out of 10 could pass the group interview unless you are acting weird or like a fool.

After the group interview, they will invite you back for the 2nd and the 3rd interviews to know more about you. You need to answer your hobbies, skills, and goals. If everything goes well, you now could join the 3-day unpaid training and learn how to make sales when you demonstrate Cutco products to your customers.

In the training, they will require you to purchase the knife set for your demonstration. The price should be $425 based on my research as of this writing.

Good Features to join Vector Marketing:

  1. You can start selling once you turn 18 years old.
  2. You don’t need to have work experience in the past, and they will teach you everything you need to know.
  3. Except for the $425 for the demo kit, there is no cost needed to start Vector Marketing. (low cost to start)

The Compensation Plan

Unlike other MLMs in the industry, Vector Marketing’s compensation plan is simple and easy to understand. There are only two ways to make money when you sell Cutco Cutlery with Vector Marketing.

-Guaranteed Wage-

Cutco gives a guaranteed wage of approximately $17 to $19 per appointment and completed by sales representatives(you). YES, per appointment. Although every appointment might take longer than one hour, you cannot refer to them as an hourly wage.

If we consider the time and the props we prepare for the demonstration, fuel to drive there, and parking fees, etc. the hourly wage is close to half or less of $$17 to $19.

-Retail Commission-

You earn a 10%-30% retail commission if you are lucky to sell any knives to your customers face to face. The more you sell, the more commissions you can earn. Here are the extra commissions you can earn:

  • $0 – $1,000: 10%
  • $1,001 – $4,000: 15%
  • $4,001 – $7,500: 20%
  • $7,501 – $12,000: 25%
  • $12,000 – $24,000: 30%
  • $24,000+: 30%+(unspecified)

Ugly Truth About Vector Marketing

TOP#1 Low Income Potential

If you look closer to the business opportunity, it’s easy to find out that Vector Marketing recruits students as employees instead of distributors. However, they don’t pay you a minimum wage but pay you per appointment($17-$19), and it’s highly possible that you only get half of $17-$19 or less once you deduct all the other costs.

Many students quit this job after two weeks because they find out it’s not worth the time and effort they spent on Vector Marketing. Another point is that they cannot think of anyone they could sell knives once they demonstrate to all family and friends. These two are probably the reasons why I cannot find the official income disclosure from the Vector Marketing website. What I can get is always the below screenshot:

TOP#2 Prey On Naive Students

College students quit the job so quickly that Vector Marketing needs to supply new employees(students) as stable as possible. They most likely use the below methods to hire college students, and I am pretty sure that you might get attracted by one of the below:

  • Word-of-Mouth
  • Poster/newspaper/social media ads
  • Letters
  • Cold phone calls
  • Text on the classroom blackboard

TOP#3 Lawsuits

It’s not hard tom find many lawsuits that Vector Marketing faced in the past. I did my researches and found the lawsuits easily. It seems that Vector marketing didn’t solve the problems that using misleading job descriptions to recruit college students, and it’s impossible to trust a company like this.

What I Liked About Vector Marketing

TOP#1 No Work Experience Needed

Normally, when you apply for a job vacancy, the job descriptions will list out that you need prior work experience. For Vector Marketing, you don’t.

In the 3-day training session, they will teach you everything you need to know how to demonstrate Cutco Knives to either your friends or family. To be honest, I like this and it kinda makes me feel like I can be a TOP sales if I have diligence, persistence, and patience.

TOP#2 Learn The Script of A SalesPerson

When you answer the call from Vector Marketing recruiters, the script starts. What they need to achieve is to get you to the 2nd & the 3rd interview, then you agree to attend the training. For recruiters, the more attendees mean more sales eventually. When you get the training, they will also teach you how to get your customers to feedback with your desired answers and the canned responses to handle objections. You could check HERE.

On the other side, I think it’s a very good opportunity to learn all the scripts if your goal is to become a salesperson of cars, insurance, or real estate for your career. Although joining Vector Marketing won’t get you rich quickly, it might help you to master all the scripts. Try to take this as an internship as a salesperson, you will feel so much better.

Here is the YouTube video of 3 keys to being successful showing Cutco knives, it worth a watch if you decide to join this opportunity!

TOP#3 Not Much Explanation Needed To Sell Knives

When you join other MLMs like Neora or Jeunesse, it takes lots of time to memorize the unique ingredients or patent technology they manufacture the products. But, to sell knives, what are the extra explanations needed for your customers?

Who’s Vector Marketing For?

I want to say “No One!” But, after a second thought, Vector Marketing is for students who take this as an internship to learn all kinds of scripts. If we are talking about the opportunity of making money with Vector Marketing, I would not recommend it to anyone around me!

Can You Make Money Selling Vector Marketing?

Yes, I believe there some students who are born to be top sales while the majority fail. I am not saying you won’t make money with Vector Marketing, but you need to consider how possible you create a stable income stream with Vector Marketing, right?

For me, becoming one of Vector Marketing takes too much time but only gets a few bucks back, so it’s not my cup of tea.

Is Vector Marketing A Scam Or…?

No, Vector Marketing is definitely not a scam nor a pyramid scheme. It offers all students an opportunity to sell Cutco’s knives and there are people do make money through the compensation plan.

Let’s go through again for things I loathe about Vector Marketing before your final decision:

  1. Low-income potential, it’s highly possible that you only make a few bucks in the long run.
  2. They prey on naive students and it’s close to using them.
  3. Vector Marketing has many lawsuits in history and settled a few times with lots amount of money.

If you have a “Nah” for any above, you will be interested in my alternative way to make money online:

My Alternative Way to Make Money Online

My alternative way to make money online is through Affiliate Marketing instead of promoting Vector Marketing products in person. Try to imagine you sell Cutco knives to your friends, family, or anyone you know, don’t you feel embarrassed and nervous? They might avoid you ever since.

Doing affiliate marketing will save you from that:

  • You don’t even need to buy any physical or digital products to stock in your basement or storeroom.
  • You also don’t need to show people how good the products are in face to face.
  • You are not restricted to only promote Cutco knives. You can promote anything you like!

What you need to do is to create a website, YouTube channel, or Facebook/Instagram with quality content that makes your target audience trust you then purchase through your affiliate links. If they do purchase, you earn commissions. Simple as that!

  1. Hi Matt!

I recently read another review about a knife selling MLM and I was wondering how they make money selling knife sets at expensive prices. This price here is a little less, a little over $400 us, but still … it ‘s a lot for a set of kitchen knives.

I find the way that this company recruits students somewhat fishy. The flyer is not clear what they are hiring them for, it is very misleading. A student may think that they are getting a paid job when it turns out to be a door to door sales job, or phone sales if you want.

It is not a job that will provide a student the much needed dough, and students do need their money … I would recommend this company to experienced sales people, but not students. I am not sure why they target students?

    • Hi Christine,

Thanks for your feedback! I am not quite sure why Vector Marketing is only recruiting students, but I do think they are walking in the grey zone. In my opinion, I do not want to join this company to sell knives for Cutco but chose another alternative platform to make stable income streams online.

      Matt
