What is doTerra?
-Summary of doTERRA–
Product Name: doTERRA
Founders: David Stirling(CEO) in April 2008
Product Type: Essential Oils and other related products(MLM, multi-level marketing)
Price: $35 membership fee / renewal fee $25
Rating: 40 / 100
First of all, the name of “doTERRA” is coming from the Latin word for “gift of the Earth”, and it was founded by David Stirling and many other former executives of Young Living – another MLM company that sells essential oils.
doTERRA has more than over 3 million Wellness Advocates across 100 countries, and the sales exceeded over 1 billion by the end of 2015.
Note: doTERRA calls its members”Wellness Advocates”, they will buy the products from doTERRA and distribute them in their regions.
What’s inside doTERRA?
Just like other MLM companies, doTERRA has its own essential oils and related products for sales. Besides that, you could build your own team to maximize your earnings through its MLM system.
It’s similar to many MLM companies in the industry, there’s no big difference.
The key point I want to highlight here is doTerra’s products and the compensation plan. It’s always better we know the rules before we play & win the game.
doTERRA Product Lines
For sure, we start from the famous doTERRA’s essential oils since they start from 25 single oils and 10 oil blends back in 2008. It’s also the first thing comes to people’s mind when they hear doTERRA.
doTERRA developed many lines after 11 years, so I won’t go through one by one for all the doTERRA products. I will only focus on essential oils & products I am interested in.
If you like to know all of doTERRA’s products, you could check HERE.
- Essential Oils: including single oils(lavender, lemongrass, rose, etc) and proprietary blends(calmer, breathe, cheer, etc)
- doTERRA On Guard Products: hand wash, mouth wash, laundry detergent, etc
- doTERRA Breathe Products: vapor stick or respiratory drops(something keeps your respiratory system working)
- DeepBlue Products: soothing products that could be used for massage after a long day work or intense workout
- DigestZen Products: yes, the products that help people with digestive issues
- Personal Care: body care, hair care or skincare products
- Supplements: daily vitality, kids supplements, or weight loss products
The Compensation Plan
Here comes the crucial part of doTERRA, the compensation plan.
Retail Bonus: you earn 25% profits from the retail customers. If you sell $100 value products, then you earn $25. No problem, it’s easy to understand!
Fast Start Bonus: once you have a 100 PV(product volume). You can enroll people into the same system to become your downlines and you will receive 20% of the PV of every order the new Wellness Advocate places in their first 60 days.
- Level 1: 20%
- Level 2: 10%
- Level 3: 5%
Power of 3 Bonus: To earn the first $50, you need to have at least 3 downlines and must have a monthly total of 100 PV and your team volume (which is you and 3 downlines) must be 600 PV or more. The bonus starts from $50, $250, then $1,500.
Unilevel Organizational Bonus: you earn a certain percentage of your downline’s earnings once you meet doTERRA’s requirements, and you can earn up to 7 levels below you. (This sounds lucrative!)
If you are still not clear about the compensation plan from doTERRA, don’t panic, the below video made by doTERRA could make you understand too.
What I Liked About doTERRA
TOP#1 Essential Oils Did Work!
Since I am using essential oils to cure my allergic rhinitis, it’s a “Hell Yes! Come on in!” when people try to sell them at my door.
Many studies nowadays mentioned essential oils are validated to soothe and calm the pain by a disease, like this page.
Essential oils are proven that it helps people to decrease anxiety and depression, improvement in sleep, tiredness, drowsiness.
TOP#2 A Great BBB Rating
BBB stands for Better Business Bureau, and it gives the rating to make buyers and sellers trust each other.
doTERRA got an A-PLUS ratings on BBB, and that is fantastic.
I suggest you to check the rating of the company that has products or services you want to purchase, and don’t miss the feedback from other customers since you might face the same.
Ugly Truth About doTERRA
TOP#1 Low Income Potential
Once you start your journey of wellness advocate(doTERRA affiliate), you have to sell as many products as possible to level up your rankings inside doTERRA.
The first time I see the income disclosure from doTERRA, I think the income is very impressive. The average annual earnings of doTERRA’s 62% members is $27,557?
Oops…we need to look closer again. The rankings in the below screenshot are for Silver and the above leaders.
Below silver membership, there are other 6 level memberships: wellness advocate, manager, director, executive, elite, premier.
All these 6 memberships must earn less than $27,557, and I am sure the amount might be less than we predict. You definitely can’t quit your job by only selling doTERRA essential oils or other products.
TOP#2 Recruit, Recruit, and Recruit
Since it’s not that easy to make a big fortune by only selling doTERRA’s products, recruitment becomes another way to maximize your earning at doTERRA.
Almost all the MLM companies do the same thing, so let’s not blame doTERRA on this. It’s just the first rule of any MLM companies.
You will earn as quick as possible once you enroll more downlines into doTERRA’s system, but this also makes you inevitably become lonely in the long run & lose all your friends.
Welcome to the “NFL Club”(No Friends Left) if you are determined to join any MLM companies out there.
TOP#3 Marketing Violation
In 2014, FDA issued an FDA warning letter to doTERRA for allowing the advocates to market its products as possible treatments or cures for Ebola, cancer, autism, and other conditions.
It’s difficult to make money by selling doTERRA’s products, so every wellness advocate needs to convince any potential customers to buy them with some exaggerations.
It also makes doTERRA advocate understands the only way to make a fortune is to recruit more people into the system like what I just said in the previous paragraph.
TOP#4 CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade?
doTERRA said its products are CPTG certified pure therapeutic grade, and they always show its customers that all the oils are not just pure but also got certified.
At the same time, I didn’t find any proof that CPTG is backed or accredited by other authorities in the industry. Meaning there is no such thing.
doTERRA trademarked CPTG for the products and put the “certification seal” on the package, but that doesn’t it is real.
Who Is doTERRA For?
People who love essential oils and have a very strong sales background, presentation skills, also excellent at recruiting downlines. If you are not even close, I suggest you try other alternatives to make money online.
doTERRA vs. Young Living
I listed out the comparison between doTERRA & Young Living, so you could read carefully before you join any of them.
What concerns me a lot is both companies ever got the FDA warning in the same year for allowing its members to promote the products as possible treatments to some diseases.
About health, I prefer a 100% true products with the correct information, instead of lying to maximize the sales.
Is doTERRA Essential Oils A Scam?
No, doTERRA is not a scam. Considering the real essential oils and other products, it is indeed an MLM company that needs you to recruit more people into the system.
Before you proceed to join doTERRA, I hope you read my full review carefully for all the things I don’t like for it. The first, low income potential. You found doTERRA is because you need extra bucks in your pocket, but the results are not ideal.
The second, you need to recruit as many people as possible to make more commissions.
The third, doTERRA ever allowed its advocate to promote the products with something not validated or proven. It’s hard to tell that they won’t do it again in the future.
The last, the CPTG certified pure therapeutic grade isn’t that real in the industry, and it only works for doTERRA.
My Alternative Way to Make Money Online
If I have to choose an alternative way to replace doTERRA, I would say Affiliate Marketing. The best part of affiliate marketing is you don’t even need to place an order like what you have to do inside doTERRA(100 PV).
You only need to create a website with quality content that turns your passion or interests into something brings you a more stable and sustainable income source.
The platform I am using at the moment is Wealthy Affiliate. Why I choose it? It has the solid basic and advanced training, LIVE training every Friday night, FREE keyword tool, the world-famous friendly community.
